Basic Photography Course Introducing Stock Photography

StopStock photography is simply photos taken “on spec”. This means the photographer takes pictures of various objects, people, or situations, and sells them after the pictures have been taken. They are not on a specific photography assignment, instead they are taking photos of subjects they’d like to take pictures of.

Stock photography is primarily used in printed advertisements, brochures, magazines, and web sites, though there are many other ways stock photography can be used.

Stock photography is licensed in several different ways. The two most popular are Rights Managed Stock Photography, and Royalty Free Stock Photography.

Rights Managed photography is the use of stock photos that are licensed for a specific, limited time and purpose. If an advertiser for instance, needed a stock photo for one specific ad campaign, they could license a photo for that specific use. And they’d be limited to using the photo only for that campaign. They’d also be charged based on the size of the ad campaign they intended to use the stock photo for.

If they wanted to use the same photo again, they’d have to pay another fee. And that fee might be different, if the campaign use and sizes are different. These recurring fees are called royalties, and with rights managed stock photography they can be quite hefty. Ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars for the limited use of one photograph.

Royalty free stock photography allows you to pay a license fee once, then use the photo multiple times. There are usually limitations on this form of stock photography, however the restrictions are not nearly as narrow as rights managed photography is. A designer or advertiser could license one photo for instance, and use it in hundreds of different ad campaigns, without incurring additional fees. In other words: No royalty fees need to be paid.

Generally royalty free stock photography can be licensed for as little as $50 up to several hundred dollars depending on the licensing source and rights given.

One of the most popular forms of stock photography for small and web based businesses, is royalty free micro stock photography. This is a variation on the royalty free model, but it’s referred to as “micro stock” because designers and advertisers pay just a dollar or two per image license.

This type of stock photography has become quite popular with web site owners particularly, because it’s a very inexpensive way to get top quality photos for use on their web sites. Quality stock photos can be licensed for as little as $1 in smaller, web friendly sizes. And prices go up to about $3 or $5 for larger, print quality photo sizes.

Since these photos are royalty free, designers can use them multiple times for that one time low cost. Be sure to check the licensing restrictions though. Royalty free does not automatically mean “public domain” or “copyright free”, and each micro stock photography site has their own particular use restrictions on the photos you license.

Basic Photography – How To Add Special Effects To Photos With Adobe Photoshop And Basic Photography Tutorials

StopIn an effort to create a lasting impact from your photo, leaving the impressions on viewer’s minds, it should have something that keeps him glued. You can employ Adobe PhotoShop’s special effects tools in the menu to add a lightning effect. You can double your exposures or do whatever you choose. The advantage of owning Adobe Photoshop is the rewards it will bring. In fact, I used this program to design my book covers, make commercials, advertising slicks and more, so sit back and enjoy this basic photography course.

Lightning Effect: You can use various types of lightning effects and of different colors, applying them to an image using Adobe Photoshop. This will enhance your basic photography skills tremendously. Note that these tips are perfect for newbies as everything is explained in basic photography terms.

How to do it:-
We’ll follow a stepwise manner in doing this:
1.Open your editor or Adobe Photoshop program
2.Now open the desired image (make sure you open it in RGB format)
3.Now from the filter menu choose Renderer and then select your desired lighting effects.
4.You will see the lighting effect dialogue box opens up

1.Choose the desired lighting style from the topmost selection menu; you will notice the options style of lights. 2.Choose the light type and move the sliders to set the intensity and focus.
3.You can also change the properties by toggling the sliders for glass, material, exposure, and ambiance.
4.You can also change the color of light. To change the color of light just click on the boxes to the right of the light type and properties. This will open the color, picker dialogue box. Choose a color and press ok.
5.To change the direction or placement of light just drag any of the points on the outside ellipse or center point. Click ok after you have adjusted the direction and placement of light. How about that for a basic photography lesson!

Creating Double Exposure effect is one of the best basic photography tips: A double exposure image is created by overlaying two images on one another.

Like above we’ll again follow a stepwise procedure:
1.Select all or a part of the image using the selection tools at the top of the toolbar.
2.Now from the edit menu choose copy.
3.Now open a second image file.
4.From the window menu, you can select the show layer.
5.On the ‘show layer’ popup right click and choose new layer and press ok.
6.Now go to the edit menu and press paste.
7.From the layer’s palette, move the opacity slider to 50%.
8.Now drag the mouse from inside the selection to move it.
9.To scale the pasted selection, click on image menu and then select image size. Adjust the size by adjusting the pixels and height from the pop-up window.

The editing programs today can do wonders to images. One of the most popular programs is Adobe PhotoShop, since this editing program is one of the most sophisticated tools. Most pro photographers will use this program, since you can create web sites, book covers, images, movies, and more. Adobe is also used to design manuals, graphics, commercials, fliers, and more. This particular program I miss. I lost my copy during a severe virus attack, and the downside is it costs around $1000 to $1500 to replace.

Outside of lightning effects, you can also setup brick backgrounds, or whatever background you choose. If you own this program you know what I am talking about, however if you have never had the experience and can get the opportunity to try out Adobe I promise you will have loads of fun.  For additional editing assistance check out your menus, Help tools.

Photography Basics – Paper And Understanding The Art Of Photography

When I talk about the art of photography, I am referring to art as finished photography on paper, the product that other people will see and admire, so these tips will put you on track with the most important of digital photography basics, which is the final presentation of your digital photos.

Photo paper or digital photo printing paper is a high quality print paper with different levels of gloss finish. Normal prints from film cameras and digital photo prints are similar to touch but follow entirely different processes.

For their digital photography, the professionals expect a true archival print media in a variety of weights and textures of surface. The photo Industry is providing acid free, one hundred percent cotton, hot press paper that is coated on both sides to get versatility.

Additionally the digital photo paper is also free from lignin and chlorine to retain the image quality over a longer period. The digital photo paper is specially coated to get realistic and vibrant color prints. The semi- gloss paper which comes as a sample along with the digital or laser printer produces good results but they are very expensive.

A good quality digital photo paper should reproduce true photographic gloss, white colors at its brightest and in highest resolution. They are capable of retaining a sharp and well defined image and text with colors appearing true to the originals and with excellent clarity. Extreme care should be taken to use the correct type of digital photo paper which is most suitable for the printer being used.

Using the fuser technology, Laser printers use a heated roller to fuse the toner to the paper. When glossy photo paper is used in a laser printer there is a possibility of the fuser melting the glossy film covering the photo paper thereby ruining the paper and also causing damage to the printer. This might not happen every time but extreme care should be taken to use appropriate photo paper when a laser printer is used.

Photo paper contains seven layers. They are arranged in the order of a resin coated layer, base which contains a layer of high compressed paper, again followed by a resin coated layer, brightness controlled layer, whiteness controlled layer, color stabilized layer and image formed layer to get a perfect output. Heavy weight photo paper normally refers to higher end photo paper having a thickness of 8mil or above.

The usual terms to define photo paper finishes are semi-gloss, gloss and high gloss, each term referring to the surface shine of the photo paper. A less shiny coated finish is available in semi gloss surfaced photo paper which bears a satin finish.

Images which appear without any shine, non reflective and soft can be produced by using matte finished photo paper. Whiteness of the photo paper gives brightness to it. Brightness of a photo paper is expressed as numbers starting from one to hundred.

Photography Basics – Discover How To Take Better Pictures

StopSo, you own a digital camera and it’s really amazing. But can you explain the working of your digital camera to someone who asks about it? Do you know the photography basics? Well, you might very well be amongst those people who brought digital cameras only because they are digital. Now its time you should know how a digital camera works and get to understand the photography basics.

Before understanding digital photography basics it is essential for you to understand the concept of digital image. A digital image is basically an extensive sequence of 0s and 1s which represents the pixels that collectively form a full image.

The working of a digital camera is quite similar to the working of an analogue camera. The difference between the two is of the technologies employed. A digital camera consists of all components of analogue camera except for the roll. A digital camera does not have a roll. Instead, the images are stored on a semiconductor device as binary digits of 0s and 1s in a digital camera.

A digital camera has inbuilt sensors which convert light into electric charges. The sensors are in the array of 10mm across. The image sensor which is used in a majority of digital cameras is Charged Coupled Device (CCD). Some digital cameras also use Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS). The working of these two devices is more or less same, they convert light into electrons.

As a CCD converts light into electrons, the accumulated charges are initially stored as analogue data and are then converted into digital form through a device called analogue-to-digital converter (ADC). Over the silicone chip, there is a huge collection of very minute light sensitive diodes known as photosites or pixels. These pixels convert light into electrical charges or electrons. As more and more light strikes an array of pixels, they produce more and more electrons. As the lens enters the camera through the lens, it hits the CCD followed by pressing the shutter button. As soon as the shutter opens, it elucidates each and every pixel with various intensities. You are already learning some of the real photography basics so crucial for understanding your digital camera.

The CCD sensors create a low noise, high quality image but they consume a lot of power. On the other hand the CMOS sensors, though consume 100 times less power than CCD, have noise in the image. Moreover, the quality of image is not so good. The CMOS sensors are relatively cheaper than CCD sensors. Moreover CMOS sensors do not require ADC for conversion of data into digital form. The digital cameras which are based on CMOS sensors are small, cheap and best for economy.

When the image gets stored in the inbuilt memory of the camera, it can be directly loaded to a computer. These images can also be sent directly to a printer. The transfer can be done via using the latest serial, parallel, USB or SCSI connection to either the computer or the printer. Digital photography basics means knowing basic computer skills too, so you can produce and edit your digital images that you could even sell on the internet. Aquarium Photography Tips – Use a telephoto lens

StopDo you have fish in your aquarium? If you do, believe it or not, you can take beautiful pictures of the fish using a telephoto lens.

So just how does one do it?

First things first, set your photography equipment up. Before you start taking any pictures, just make sure that the tripod and the camera, as well as the light are located at the aquarium tank’s top. Do not immediately take any pictures. Let the fish get familiar with the equipment first. This will help them relax and so shots taken of them will look natural and candid.

Usually, the best film to use when taking shots of moving subjects – in this case, the fish – is an ISO 400 film. This type of film is able to take shots of quick moving subjects without the blur. This is also the best type of equipment to be used for an environment that is low on lighting yet fast in movement.

So how long should the lens be?

When taking pictures of aquarium fish, a lens with a measurement anywhere between twenty eight millimeters and eighty millimeters is best to use. For close up shots, use a tube that can be extended.

Be aware though that you need to try out different types of lenses and measurements to make sure that the desired effect you want to achieve is ultimately accomplished. Experimenting is the key. The type and length of the lens that works well outdoors may not work as well when used inside a fish tank.

Be sensitive of the shadows

Try, as much as possible, to observe any shadows that crop up in the background while you are taking your shots. It is best that you first wait a moment until there is a fish that appears to contrast against the background and away from any shadows. This ensures that your subject will appear clear in the final and developed picture.

And then there was light

The tank you are going to take pictures of should be well lighted. It is best that light be placed at the top of the tank. You need to be careful though when lighting is used in the water as electricity is involved. Make sure that the placement of the lighting is safe and secure to prevent any type of electric shock as this could prove to be fatal, both to the fishes as well as to the photographer.

It is also highly inadvisable to use your camera flash when taking pictures of aquarium fish. This is because the glare of the flash could give off a reflection or produce a shiny, glaring spot in the picture that could distract, if not ruin, the shot.

Focus, focus, focus

As much as possible, focus on the moving fish as it darts and swims across the water. It is during this time when you could determine the specific type of measurement, lens, aperture opening as well as shutter speed. Here is a good tip, if a fish is swimming towards you, try to increase the depth of field in your camera to create a much more focused and clear shot.

The secret to good photography

There is a way to take great pictures. However, it won’t take just a few seconds, hours, days, weeks or months, but probably years to achieve. A lot of patience as well as a lot of practice is needed to perfect a shot, a photography technique and a photography skill.

Also, avoid having any electrical equipment near any form or types of water. Common sense dictates that doing so avoids any and all forms of electrical shock that could prove to be fatal.

All in all, photography is an art form and medium that is used to express any emotion, idea or message. For the photography hobbyist, taking pictures is a way to experiment and explore, while a serious photographer could just as well use photography to convey a concept that no other medium could best express. Photos not just capture a moment, but an idea whose time has come.

Professional Digital Photography Tips

StopThere are two things that are needed to capture the perfect shot. They are the talent of the photographer and the model. If one of these is missing, the pictures will never land on a magazine and will just be hidden in a drawer.

The photographer can control the lighting, the type of camera to be used on the photo shoot and the kind of film that will be great developed. The model has to show up for the event and a with a little magic from the assistant transform the face with makeup.

Cosmetic products can really make a person standout. The same beauty products that can be bought at the supermarket are also used by people during a photo shoot. The difference is that the model has two or three assistants putting this all on him or her.

There are a few things that the model needs to look good in front of the camera.

The first is the concealer. Everyone has a few dark spots and applying just a little can cover these areas until the photo shoot is over.

Next is the foundation. This should be applied all over the face. This will make the skin look smooth and hide those pimples and freckles that no one wants to see.

Powder is another essential part of putting on make-up. This should be focused on the forehead, cheeks and chin, mainly because light captures these areas very well especially when model looks into camera and smiles.

The eyebrows can be enhanced using a pencil or a brush. This will make the person look sexy as if the model is looking deep into the reader’s eyes.

Eye shadows are also another important part. The right color will depend on the facial skin of the model. The assistant should be careful not to put too much or too little since this could ruin the shot.

Photo shoots are long and if the model is very popular, the fatigue of going from one location to the next can be covered by using some eyeliner. This should be placed under the eye and on the edges to prevent eye bags from appearing on the images.

The most important thing for makeup which is usually the finishing touch is the lipstick. The assistants can also do this using a pencil and some lip gloss.

Makeup can be done in just a few minutes. This magic can bring the model to life and capture the eyes of the readers for the product being endorsed.

Digital Camera Driver Advantages For Digital Photographers

StopA digital camera cannot be seen as a complete gadget in itself. You may need a lot of other features to make the camera give you its best. A digital camera driver is one such accessory. Read on for the most genuine information on how the digital camera driver can really help you.

As the modern hardware is quite diverse in its application, there are many operating systems in which the drivers can be used. The modern technology uses the drivers for interfacing the gadgets like, the digital cameras, video adapters, printers, network cards and the sound cards.

A driver device, to say precisely, is a computer program. A driver is a typical operating system, for example a Windows or Linux or FreeBSD. Its main purpose is to interact with the hardware device. A digital camera driver is most importantly an instruction manual. It provides the operating system with all the relevant information about how it can manage and convey with that particular piece of hardware. In a layman’s language, a driver is a very crucial piece of data to a program application.

When you go out for a shoot with your digital camera you take up memory cards with you. You store all your images in the memory cards. Now when you need to transfer all your images in the computer system, you need a driver. A driver is the software with the help of which you can transfer your photos in the computer. Otherwise it is not possible for the computer to read the photos stored in your digital camera. Once the photographs are recorded in the computer, they are free for you to use, as you like.

When you purchase a digital camera, you get a driver compatible to it from the company itself. It is an important point to note here that, each digital camera has its own driver. This depends on the company and model of the digital camera. You cannot use the driver of one camera for the other one. The drivers help the user to operate the digital camera as per its features and applications.

In most cases, writing a digital camera driver is considered to be a challenge. To operate a driver properly, one has to have a deep understanding and technical skill. You must spend some time beforehand to understand how exactly a given feature functions. How the driver is compatible to the camera. Understand its both aspects— hardware as well as software. When you understand it totally, it will seem to be easy for you. But, the beginning can be tough.

A driver helps in the multiple ways. It can show you all the pictures that you have shot in a nice way of a slide show. It copies all the photos one by one to your computer. The driver helps you making a lot of uses of the photograph. It is of good use for you in all the cases— whether you are an average user or a professional photographer. If you need to upload your photographs to a photo web site or just like to email them to your friends, then also the software of driver can assist you.

The Complete Understanding of Digital Camera Technology

StopDigital Cameras are all the rage these days. These latest technology cameras are getting popular with each passing day indeed. The entire world of photography and video shooting has taken a huge leap after the arrival of digital cameras in the market.

For a first time digital camera user it is essential to know their working as well as technology. If you want to enrich yourself with such important DigiCam technology, read this article.

First things first. Understand the terms digital camera and analog camera. The digital cameras are much like the simple analog camera. They contain some basic things like a lens, light shutter that are found in an analog camera as well. The difference lies in the technology. The fundamental difference in the technology is of the photo sensitive cells. In a conventional camera the light when reflected from the light shutters falls on the film. But in a digital camera, the light falls up on the image censors or the photo sensitive cells. These cells are many in numbers.

An image censor or the photo sensitive cell is actually a microchip of 10mm. This is the most prominent feature of the digital camera technology that distinguishes the digital camera from a formula analog camera. The image censors are responsible to convert the light signals in to the electrical signals.

In scientific terminology, each image sensor is a charged-couple device (CCD) made up of silicon. The silicon chip image censors are also capable of measuring the frequency of light falling on them. The sensors play a significant role in the development of digital signals. Once the light signals are stored by image censors as electrical signals, they are transferred to another device that converts these signals to digital mode.

The device that converts analog signals to digital signals is known as Analog to Digital Converter (ADC). The silicon chip consists of several electronically charges tubes containing both a positive and negative charge on them. These tubes are called photo sensitive diodes as they are light sensitive diodes which are also known as photosites. They convert the light charges (photons) into electrical signals called electrons. The sensors are very much sensitive. The more the light falls on the sensors, the more pixels they produce. Every 1000 array silicon chip produces 1 pixel.

Simply, you can explain the process in two sentences. The process of converting the light signals into the digital signals starts from the lens. The light enters into a digital camera through lens. Then the light falls up on the Charged Couple Devise (CCD) which produces the electrical charges.

After this the electrical charges are converted into the digital signals by the Analog to Digital Converter. Some digital camera manufacturers do not use the CCD. Instead they use the Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOD). This is much cheaper in price than the CCDs. Also the CMOD takes up less power than the other photosensitive devices. The technology for these chips is same as the CCD. It is also based on the microchip technology.

The Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOD) is generally used in the smaller cameras. Despite of the fact that they are light, cheap and also efficient, most of the mega pixel digital cameras use CCD technology. This is because the CMOD may be cheaper but you will get a much better picture quality by using the CCD.

The terms used and specific information related to the digital camera technology may sound a bit difficult for you initially. But you will find a number of resources that explain the process of working of a digital camera in detail. Also the camera experts publish their reviews and articles to teach the public about proper functioning of the digital camera to avoid any complications in their usage.

Even if you don’t want to read an expert’s review on the technology of DigiCams this article can surely help you know the digital camera working. The points discussed are simple, and yet too essential for a DigiCam buyer. Best 7 Strategies for Portrait Photography

StopPhotography is one of the most popular hobbies and professions in the world. There is nothing like capturing fragments of reality and preserving it on film. There are many kinds of photography, but one of the most in-demand is portrait photography.

A good portrait is described as a picture with a quality image that captures both the physical features and character of the subject. Taking good portraits is very challenging because a photographer needs a subject with an upbeat personality that also reflects sensitivity and liveliness.

There are lots of factors that photography enthusiasts need to know in capturing the perfect portrait.

1. Revelation of the subject’s character
For a portrait to be considered good, it must capture at least one element that shows the features and traits of the subject as well as one that captures his or her individuality. The image must reveal an important part of the subject’s character that can be identifiable by those who know them. Therefore, it is quite challenging for a portrait to show the character of his subject if they have only met for the first time.

2. The right moment to take pictures
Definitely, the photo shoot should start when the subject is comfortable and at ease with his or her appearance and surroundings. Never shoot if the subject is tense or uneasy, because it will reflect in the pictures. There is no rule that says a conversation should stop when shooting starts, it can still continue especially if it makes the subject open up more to the photographer.

Remember that the subject does not need to smile to make the portrait look good. Oftentimes, a thoughtful or a serious expression is preferred since it reveals more of the subject’s character.

3. Preparedness of the photographer
This is important since it is the photographer who takes control of a photo session. The subject must feel that the person behind the camera knows what he’s doing and is experienced enough to tell the subject how to pose. The photographer himself must be prepared and relaxed throughout the session.

4. Right kind of lighting
Probably the best light that can be used for capturing the personality of the subject is natural daylight. The variety of lighting choices brought about by outdoor conditions gives more creative leeway for the photographer. Having the subject sit near the window can also produce great effects. The only disadvantage of natural light is that it’s not always consistent. This is the reason all photographers must utilize artificial lighting. All photographers must have studio flashes. Also, the position of the photographer in relation to the subject can also be shifted in order to maximize the light available.

5. Appropriate background
Simply put, a bad background can destroy a picture. Always pay close attention on the scenery behind the subject when framing shots. There are many creative options that be used when shooting outdoors. The subject can be made to pose beside or in front of colorful flowers or leaves, the sea or the sky. To reduce the effect of a distracting background, a photographer can make use of long lenses or an expansive aperture. For indoors, one can use black or grey cloth for the background, then adding colored transparent plastics over the flashes to modify color.

6. Usage of costumes and props
Portraits usually are a rare photograph of a subject, and good costumes can make the portrait more interesting and valuable. You don’t always need to use a full costume, sometimes a hint of it will make wonders, such as hats or scarves. Props should be used very carefully, and should not distract from the main subject of the photograph. A prop should establish the natural pose and mood of the one being photographed.

7. Framing
The kind of framing can already create the image desired by the photographer. It is recommended that photos be cropped before shooting. The image should be checked a few seconds before clicking the shutter. Images that are not needed should be excluded from the shot.

Producing the perfect portrait may seem hard at first but these tips can help novices so that they can shoot better pictures.
